Thank You Mya!
Mya visits the NFHS to deliver some donations for a class projectThe Nobody project is going on in Mya's Grade 1 class at Kate S. Durdan school. Nobody is a plain denim doll that has no gender, age, or values. The goal is to turn the "Nobody" into a Somebody by giving it positive life experiences. With each positive experience it does, it will gain a personality and turn into Sombody that is special.
Each student takes the doll for a week and plans something special to do. They think about who/ what they want to help and how. Next, students create a sharing page for the Nobody book. Finally, they pin a special memory item or picture to the doll as a reminder of its many helpful deeds around the community. At the end of the year, Somebody will represent some great kids who did special things in the community. |

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE A HUGE SUCCESS
Thank you letter from organizer George WeaverThe Niagara Falls Humane Society is thrilled to announce that $23,560 in tickets were purchased over the duration of the Christmas Raffle. One fact stands out above all others when we look at the success of our Christmas Raffle during the previous 24 days. Without the generosity of the local Niagara Falls business community the NFHS raffle would never have gone further than a promising idea. We received donations from a wide variety of businesses in Niagara Falls allowing us to offer the public 2 main prizes and 23 gift baskets with a value of $350 to over $400 per basket. With so many businesses involved we were able to provide the public with outstanding prizes containing a wide variety of items appealing to all interests. When we greeted customers and explained to them that all the prizes involved in the raffle were donated by local businesses it made customers perk up their ears and open their wallets to aid in our mission to help the animals get rehabilitated and ready for adoption.
We would like to thank the following businesses for their support.
The three major contributors were:

The Niagara Falls Humane Society would like to say a great big THANK YOU to all the people who bought tickets for the raffle. All ticket proceeds will go directly to the animals. Thank you for helping us sell more tickets by spreading the word to family,friends,co-workers,and on the internet.
I want to extend a personal thank you to all NFHS volunteers and shelter staff for their hard work towards making our raffle a big success. Four people worked very closely with me throughout the event and deserve special mention. NFHS Executive Director Jay DesRoches and Community Relations Manager Cathy Fugler were always available whenever I needed some help or advice. Cathy wrote numerous letters and did all kinds of paperwork for the raffle which allowed me to concentrate on getting donations and selling tickets once the raffle began. Cathy also arranged all of our contacts with the local media to get the word out about the raffle. Whenever I called Cathy and said I need something done she always came through for me making my job a lot easier. Jay and Cathy's enthusiasm and support meant more to me than they will ever know. Karen Canning was responsible for picking which items went in what baskets and also ticket pricing. Karen has many years of experience doing fundraising and her help with this crucial phase of the raffle was essential for the success of the event. Candice Rorison also helped with these crucial decisions.Thank you ladies for taking care of the crucial decision making in regard to this phase of the raffle. Karen came in and sold tickets for us from Monday to Friday during the 24 day event also. Karen is a real trooper and working with her during the event was a pleasure. Sylvia Preston from "Just Because" made up the baskets for the raffle from her home based business. I delivered cardboard boxes full of donated merchandise and gift certificates to Sylvia's home and what she returned to me were 23 custom made gift baskets bursting with color and beautifully arranged. People would routinely come into the adoption centre and say "WOW LOOK AT THOSE BASKETS!" Her skill and artistry drew people into the store like bees to honey. Sylvia donated all her services to the raffle. Sylvia's attention to detail and pride in her work along with her sense of humour made her a joy to work with.
Many thanks to the Christmas Raffle ticket selling team Karen Canning,Pam Brown,Hether Deans, and Sheri Sutherland-Burrell. You provided a friendly face and a welcoming voice to help draw people in to see our prizes and buy tickets. With your help I was able to take care of other raffle business and have some time each day to relax knowing that you were taking good care of our customers.
Twelve months of the year seven days a week a small group of dedicated volunteers staff our Cat Adoption Centre at Niagara Square. With the help of these caring volunteers over 700 cats have found new homes during our 2 years and 3 months of existence inside Niagara Square. This Christmas raffle inside the Adoption Centre was a record breaking fundraising event to help all of the animals in the care of the Niagara Falls Humane Society. Everyone involved with volunteering their time at the Adoption Centre should take great pride in the knowledge that not only do we lead the way in adoptions but now also provide the Society with a major source of revenue as well. This is an example of what can be achieved when we all work together. Great job everyone!!!
George Weaver, NFHS Volunteer
NOTE: All of us at NFHS would like to express our gratitude to George for initiating and running this amazingly successful event. It's people like him that make such a difference in the lives and outcomes of the shelter animals. Congratulations, George, we are so very grateful to have you on the team.

Thank you for helping Dominos!
Dominos fund meets goal!
Kind hearted volunteers and supporters help stray dog
A special thank you to two of our volunteers, Crystal and Lauren who each helped Dominos by raising the funds needed to treat his heartworm condition. Dominos can now receive the treatment he needs to stay healthy. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Dominos fund. The required funds have all been raised!
This is Dominos story:
Dominos is a handsome five year old lab mix.
Our volunteer education coordinator, Crystal, saw Dominos running in traffic. She stopped to try to help him, and he jumped in her car. He helped himself to her pizza, which is why she called him Dominos.
No one came forward to claim Dominos, so he was prepared for adoption. Our vet tech found that he was heartworm positive.
Heartworm can be cured, but it is a long and expensive course of medication. The Humane Society can't afford this kind of treatment so we hoped that our kind supporters would help raise the money needed for Dominos treatment. And as usual, they came through!
Dominos is a very happy go lucky dog who loves to give kisses to everyone. He knows his commands to sit, shake a paw and go down. He also just loves his toys, and loves playtime.
Donations are always needed for animals in need. Please call the shelter if you wish to donate to the medical fund to help animals like Dominos.

Junior Fundraiser Ayden Garrett (right) donates to the Niagara Falls Humane Society!
Ayden Garrett's birthday wish was to help the animals at the Niagara Falls Humane Society. When Ayden celebrated her 10th birthday she asked for donations to help the animals instead of presents for herself. Her birthday wish came true as she collected $283.05 as well as blankets and toys to donate. When Ayden came in to give the Humane Society the donations she was presented with a certificate recognizing her as a Junior Fundraiser for the Niagara Falls Humane Society. We rely so much on donations from the public to provide for the animals in our care and are pleased that Ayden's love for animals will make a difference. |

THANK YOU KATE S DURDAN
ME TO WE CLUB HELPS THE ANIMALSHeartfelt thanks to the Me to We Club at Kate S Durdan elementary school. This program encourages students to find fulfilment and meaning in their lives by reaching out to others.
The Me to We Club this year included both grade 7 and 8 students. Funds were raised through Candy Cane Gram sales in December to provide funds to help a local charity.
NFHS was the lucky recipient of the fundraiser.
In reaching out to the community in this way, students are taught in a practical way that joy and fulfilment come from what we give, not from what we get, and that they do have the power to have a positive impact on the world around them.
Merry Christmas and thank you to everyone who supported this venture. |
