Niagara Square Adoption Centre
Updates
 |
In our very special Manuche's Place enclosure, you will find a very exceptional young cat. Cameo, a two year old tortoise shell, is a survivor. Back in February poor Cameo was hit by a car, breaking her pelvis. When she came to us at the Adoption Centre the long surgery scar was still visible, running down the centre of the paved patch on her leg. After her months of prescribed rest she is here with us, and ready for a very caring and loving family with room in their home for this beautiful and sweet little girl. She's been through a lot, and it would mean so much to her and all of her friends here at the Adoption Centre! We will be sad to see her go, but we know that she needs room to explore and new and exciting spots to sleep and play in and a family to give her all the love and attention she deserves.
Incredibly affectionate, Cameo loves to sit with, on, and around everyone who crawls into her cage to say hello. You definitely couldn't call this one shy! She will often walk up to people who come to sit by her cage, if she's not sleeping in her cosy little tent, of course! She loves treats, like most cats, and heartily appreciates a nice of mushy cat food. She's a little slower for her age, though she loves to play. While it could be partly because of her accident, it might just be because she doesn't have the room to stretch her legs in her pen. It is quite a spacious cage-thank you to the people at Home Hardware for helping us get it together!-but Cameo is a cat that likes to explore, at her own pace. We don't know much about her from before she came to us that frosty winter day, but we do know that she has stolen the hearts of many of the Adoption Centre volunteers that do such a great job caring for her.
Cameo also likes to watch the people that walk by her cage, and also the people who walk past the front of our store. So much traffic! So many interesting people come into the store, looking at all of our cats-some of them don't even notice her on their way to our big cat room. But she's there, and she'd love your attention! Just crouch down or sit next to her enclosure and give her a nice, big smile. If she's not taking her cat snooze, she might also like to play. She still has some kitten spirit, and really likes to play with the fluffy yellow rope toy that some volunteers like to wiggle in her cage. Who knows what other toys she might like!
If you´d like to sit with Cameo in her cage, just ask a volunteer on duty. It´s a bit of a tight fit and requires a bit of crawling-but all of us here at the Adoption Centre can tell you just how much Cameo will appreciate the company!
Due to her injuries, Cameo will likely develop arthritis at an early age, but is in great health otherwise. Her scars are all healed and our veterinary technicians have declared her completely healthy and ready for adoption though, so don't let that stop you from coming down to the Adoption Centre and meeting this lovely young animal who would love nothing more than to find that perfect home for her needs. Cameo doesn't like other cats, so she must be the only cat in the household. Because of her behaviour toward other cats, it is not advised that her new home also not have any dogs. |
Cymbeline learning to trust Cymbeline enjoying Jude's attention Cymbeline getting some well deserved attention |
Jude's testimonial
Cymbeline is very special to Jude.Hi, my name is Jude and I started volunteering at the Humane Society´s Adoption Centre in Niagara Square in June 2010. The first day I arrived there are approximately 35-40 cats and I was amazed. I was totally overwhelmed at their clean, open living environment. These cats were socializing with each other and most of them welcomed any visitors offering attention. They have 3 large rooms to play, eat and sleep and I kept thinking, “What a perfect set-up for these wonderful, precious cats”. I was asked to simply interact with the cats. Since I already have a rescue cat I knew this would be great fun.
On that day I noticed a small room with a sign “Scaredy Cat Room” and was intrigued. I quietly entered to find one sweet cat named Cymbelline cowering in her “safe place”. I talked very gently to her and told her I would be her friend and that she would always be safe around me. I gently reached into her enclosure and immediately she hissed and clawed me. However, I was determined to gain her trust so I sat with her for approx an hour talking gently to her. I believe pets understand every word that is spoken to them and they also understand the tone associated with your words. I shared with Cymbeline about my own pet and how she had been abandoned and abused, so I understood how she felt.
On my next visit I repeated my association with Cymbeline and our communication for a number of times. Then I decided to take her into the back office while she was inside her “safe haven” and see what happens. After coaxing and talking with her she eventually came out of her cage, so I gently picked her up quickly and hugged her. Cymbeline was terrified and leaned into my body and shook for 5-10 minutes. I spent that time to reassured her she was safe and I loved her. I continued this until I felt she was ready to meet the other cats.
Last week [July 21] I found out Cymbelline had come out of the “scaredy cat room” and sat on the couch with two of the other volunteers. This is a really big deal for Cymbelline! You see, she arrived at the Cat Adoption Centre in March and no one had been able to go near her, nor had anyone seen her leave her “safe place”. When I see her progress it brings tears to my eyes. Every day I wonder how she is doing and if anyone has adopted her yet. It´s amazing, but I feel very protective of her and I want only the BEST home for her.
Cymbelline is wonderful, special cat! She is very sweet, loving, purrs quite loud, but is still timid especially around men and children. She also still needs lots of reassurance and I believe the best home for her would be where she´s the only pet.

Giggles is scared and shies away from people at first, but she is not aggressive and will come out of her shell if someone is very slow and gentle with her. She is already becoming comfortable with roaming the enclosure while the volunteers are around. Giggles is a real sweetheart once she gets to know you and trust you. She adores when you pet her softly and purrs so sweetly. She likes when people talk to her in a quiet, gentle voice, and she responds to her name when you call her. Giggles likes to be held really close to your body as it makes her feel safe. She also enjoys hiding in small space where she can feel safe. If it gets too loud for her she will hide her head in your arms or neck. Giggles has had a pretty tough life and she is such a wonderful girl who really deserves a caring and understanding home.
