Coyotes in the community

Coyotes in the community

Coyotes, like other wild animals, sometimes come into conflict with humans.

Since migrating to Ontario from the west over 100 years ago, coyotes have adapted well to urban environments and can now be found in both rural and urban settings. Changes in land use, agricultural practices, weather and natural food shortages may contribute to increased coyote sightings in your community.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE A HUGE SUCCESSCHRISTMAS RAFFLE A HUGE SUCCESS

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE A HUGE SUCCESS
Thank you letter from event organizer George Weaver

The Niagara Falls Humane Society is thrilled to announce that $23,560 in tickets were purchased over the duration of the Christmas Raffle. One fact stands out above all others when we look at the success of our Christmas Raffle during the previous 24 days. Without the generosity of the local Niagara Falls business community the NFHS raffle would never have gone further than a promising idea. We received donations from a wide variety of businesses in Niagara Falls allowing us to offer the public 2 main prizes and 23 gift baskets with a value of $350 to over $400 per basket. With so many businesses involved we were able to provide the public with outstanding prizes containing a wide variety of items appealing to all interests. When we greeted customers and explained to them that all the prizes involved in the raffle were donated by local businesses it made customers perk up their ears and open their wallets to aid in our mission to help the animals get rehabilitated and ready for adoption.
We would like to thank the following businesses for their support.
The three major contributors were:

NRG RIDES (2011 Pink Camo 110cc ATV)
VILLAGE LEATHER FURNITURE (LAZBOY Leather Recliner)
FALLS CHEVROLET CADILLAC

Heartfelt thanks to the following businesses for their generosity:

Delta Bingo, Re/Max, Hamblet’s Roofing, United Family Martial Arts, Home Sweet Home, Niagara Helicopters, The House of Comedy, Hardbodies Fitness Centre, Lundy Manor,Napoli Ristorante and Pizzeria, Niagara Vacuums, Niagara Battery and Tire, Zehrs, FIX Auto Niagara Falls, Greg Frewin Theatre, Color by Kellie,Curves, Niagara Falls Golf Club, Eagle Valley Golf Club, Beechwood Golf and Country Club, Marcel Dionne, Niagara Employment Help Centre, Glo Niagara Tanning Centre, Papa Nick’s Bakery and Caffetteria, Hooligan’s Sports Bar, The Camera Place, Russell’s Interiors, Gifts and Accessories, Woof’n’Mew,Swiss Chalet, YMCA, !Frijoles!, Mr. Quick Soft Cloth, Angelo Rossi Galleria on Queen, Oxford Mills Bedding and Towels, Pet Valu,Cataract Bowl, Cineplex, Niagara Parks Commission, Stamford Hearing Aids,Dawk's Art,Olsen-Sottile Insurance Brokers, Lococo’s, Lisa’s Scrubs, Jiffylube, Your Neighbourhood Pizza Co, Roman Cheese Products, Home Depot,Niagara Electronics, Fine Art, Antigravity Skateboard Shop, Mcleod Dental Care, Pondview Estate Winery, Gino's Pizza, Gold ‘N Memories, Pedlar Bicycle Shop, Subilicious,Global Pet Foods, Bravo Pizzeria Grill, Artful Cookie, Doggy Dooings Etc, Perry’s Place Family Restaurant,Beatties Basics, Mick and Angelo’s, Anthony’s For Dogs Only, Red Lobster, Drummond Home Hardware, 12 Tin Cupcakery, Gabriele’s Custom Catering, The Flying Saucer, Imperial Cleaners and Tailors, Portage Bakery, Staples, Carpaccio, Chatters, No Frills, Metro Groceries, Lakeport Fish and Chips, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Garrison’s Grill, Cyberdyne Computers, Substantial Sandwiches and Treats, Just Accessories,Coffee Culture, Dominion Auto Body, The Body Shop, Cheeky Monkey’s Indoor Playland, Falls Manor Resort and Restaurant, Bank of Montreal, Bentley, Meridian, Phoenix Nails, AJ’s Music, Sobey’s, Murphy’s Music, Kendall Hurley Gallery, Picard's.

A big thank you to Sylvia of "Just Because" for all her hard work assembling the baskets for the raffle.

Our gratitude to Tammy Robertson and her team at Niagara Square for her support and enthusiasm and her belief in our work at the Adoption Centre.

Thank you to photographer Virginia MacDonald for her professional help.

The Niagara Falls Humane Society would like to say a great big THANK YOU to all the people who bought tickets for the raffle. All ticket proceeds will go directly to the animals. Thank you for helping us sell more tickets by spreading the word to family,friends,co-workers,and on the internet.

I want to extend a personal thank you to all NFHS volunteers and shelter staff for their hard work towards making our raffle a big success. Four people worked very closely with me throughout the event and deserve special mention. NFHS Executive Director Jay DesRoches and Community Relations Manager Cathy Fugler were always available whenever I needed some help or advice. Cathy wrote numerous letters and did all kinds of paperwork for the raffle which allowed me to concentrate on getting donations and selling tickets once the raffle began. Cathy also arranged all of our contacts with the local media to get the word out about the raffle. Whenever I called Cathy and said I need something done she always came through for me making my job a lot easier. Jay and Cathy's enthusiasm and support meant more to me than they will ever know. Karen Canning was responsible for picking which items went in what baskets and also ticket pricing. Karen has many years of experience doing fundraising and her help with this crucial phase of the raffle was essential for the success of the event. Candice Rorison also helped with these crucial decisions.Thank you ladies for taking care of the crucial decision making in regard to this phase of the raffle. Karen came in and sold tickets for us from Monday to Friday during the 24 day event also. Karen is a real trooper and working with her during the event was a pleasure. Sylvia Preston from "Just Because" made up the baskets for the raffle from her home based business. I delivered cardboard boxes full of donated merchandise and gift certificates to Sylvia's home and what she returned to me were 23 custom made gift baskets bursting with color and beautifully arranged. People would routinely come into the adoption centre and say "WOW LOOK AT THOSE BASKETS!" Her skill and artistry drew people into the store like bees to honey. Sylvia donated all her services to the raffle. Sylvia's attention to detail and pride in her work along with her sense of humour made her a joy to work with.

Many thanks to the Christmas Raffle ticket selling team Karen Canning,Pam Brown,Hether Deans, and Sheri Sutherland-Burrell. You provided a friendly face and a welcoming voice to help draw people in to see our prizes and buy tickets. With your help I was able to take care of other raffle business and have some time each day to relax knowing that you were taking good care of our customers.

Twelve months of the year seven days a week a small group of dedicated volunteers staff our Cat Adoption Centre at Niagara Square. With the help of these caring volunteers over 700 cats have found new homes during our 2 years and 3 months of existence inside Niagara Square. This Christmas raffle inside the Adoption Centre was a record breaking fundraising event to help all of the animals in the care of the Niagara Falls Humane Society. Everyone involved with volunteering their time at the Adoption Centre should take great pride in the knowledge that not only do we lead the way in adoptions but now also provide the Society with a major source of revenue as well. This is an example of what can be achieved when we all work together. Great job everyone!!!

George Weaver, NFHS Volunteer

NOTE: All of us at NFHS would like to express our gratitude to George for initiating and running this amazingly successful event. It's people like him that make such a difference in the lives and outcomes of the shelter animals. Congratulations, George, we are so very grateful to have you on the team.

Niagara Falls Humane Society 3rd Annual Trivia Night

The Niagara Falls Humane Society will be hosting our 3rd Annual Trivia Night on Friday, April 13, 2012. The event will be held at Delphi Hall which is located at 4414 Portage Road. We are anticipating a crowd of more than 180 people for the event, one that promises to be very popular and successful. The event is being held to raise much-needed funds for the shelter and our Adoption Centre as we receive no federal, provincial, or municipal funding.

We will be awarding door prizes while holding both a Silent Auction and Penny Raffle and we are looking to the community for donations. Any type of donation whether it be prizes, services, or gift certificates would be greatly appreciated. We will proudly display your business card beside the item that you have generously donated. Major donors will receive recognition on the NFHS website which averages 30,000 hits per month!

If you are unable to donate, you can always sponsor a table for the event. A $100 sponsorship will get your name placed on the table and guarantees several mentions of your affiliation with the NFHS throughout the evening. Should wish to attend this fun-filled night of trivia and laughter, tables of 8 are available for $160.00

It should be noted that all funds raised by the NFHS go directly to the shelter and the animals and not towards administration.

Thank you

When you adopt an animal from our shelter, you also support what we do and what we believe in. The Niagara Falls Humane Society treats all animals with the care, respect and compassion they deserve. Finding loving, responsible forever families for animals in need is always our priority.

Every animal is evaluated on a case by case basis. Animal rehabilitation is part of every day life at the shelter. We work with professionals, rescue groups, foster homes and trained volunteers to give every animal the support they need so that they can be adopted.

At NFHS there is no euthanasia for space. Ever. The shelter is a safe refuge and temporary home for displaced animals. Every possible effort is made by staff and volunteers alike to understand, support and help each animal.

We are very grateful to all our supporters, especially those who have adopted shelter animals. When you adopt, or support the shelter in any way you help us create a more humane community for the animals in our city.

GREAT NEWS - Zoe the beagle/hound mix is back home!

This morning Zoe was reunited with her owners through the Niagara Falls Humane Society. From Welland to the Niagara Falls area over 74 days missing Zoe managed to survive and come home. This day would not have happened without the help of so many caring people who we never knew till now. People such as Trish who kept encouraging us, John and Nancy who just last week renewed are hopes and provided food for Zoe hoping to catch her while she hung around their home to finally Dave and Julie who captured Zoe yesterday with the aid of the wonderful people from the Niagara Falls Humane Society.

We can't thank you all enough. God bless all of you and those who helped that we haven't mentioned. To all who have a missing pet, do not lose hope or give up praying for a miracle. The return of our Zoe is our miracle. Thanks to everyone.

Marineland

Marineland
statement from OSPCA

The Ontario SPCA takes animal cruelty concerns very seriously. We respond to an average of 16,000 cases of animal cruelty every year.

CAZA, the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums, provides standards and inspections for this type of facility in Canada. CAZA oversees the operations and deals directly with any cases that violate their standards.

It is important to note that membership in CAZA is voluntary. British Columbia is the only province with laws specifically regulating zoos and aquariums.

Marineland voluntarily participated in and successfully completed its most recent inspection by CAZA in September 2011. Marineland's license was renewed at that time for five years.

As it pertains to Ontario's Animal Welfare legislation, Marineland falls into the territory covered by the Niagara Falls Humane Society, an Affiliate of the Ontario SPCA.

Neither the Niagara Falls Humane Society nor the Ontario SPCA have received complaints regarding the care of sea mammals at Marineland.

As concerns have been alleged, the Ontario SPCA will work with other agencies to determine an appropriate course of action.

The Ontario SPCA reminds the public, should you have any concerns for animal welfare, to call the Ontario SPCA, your local Humane Society/SPCA or your local police.

Miracle Reunion

Miracle Reunion
The Stone Family reunites with Friday

The Stone family lost their cat Friday back in February. They live in St. Catharines near the lake. Somehow their cat ended up here at the NFHS. Just yesterday, the little girl said that she missed her cat and hoped he was ...alive. If he wasn't, she was comforted by the fact that at least he was in heaven. Friday is alive and well and was reunited with his family this morning. Friday was microchipped which made this reunion possible.

The NFHS will be having another microchip clinic at Global Pet Foods on Thursday May 24 from 12-7.

One of the NFHS Vet Techs will microchip your pet for a fee of $25, a substantial savings. Please get your pets microchipped.

EMPTIES FOR ANIMALSEMPTIES FOR ANIMALS

EMPTIES FOR ANIMALS
EVERY TUESDAY

Starting May 22, after the long weekend, there will be a weekly returnable beer, wine and liquor bottle collection starting with all proceeds going directly to the shelter to help the animals. I feel that this can be a great opportunity to raise funds just by spreading the word! So enjoy the long weekend (responsibly of course!) and do some good with your empty bottles!!

Many of the animals at the shelter unfortunately live there for quite some time, and it is the little extras a program like this can provide to give them some perks that will keep up their spirits until the lucky day comes for them when they are adopted. Also, abandoned and rescued special needs animals can really benefit by giving the resources to go “the extra mile” to help them.

Please “like” us on Facebook for updates and collections at: Empties for Animals NFHS, a link will be available on the NFHS Facebook page. Be sure to share the link with all of your animal loving friends!

Collections are on Tuesdays, from 1 to 3pm, and 6 to 8pm at The Cove Restaurant, located at 6130 Dunn Street. My special thanks to The Cove for allowing us to use their parking lot for this cause, please support our sponsors and stay for a while for a bite! Bring your pets for a free treat!!

You should all be very proud of yourselves!
KEEP YOUR DOGS AT HOMEKEEP YOUR DOGS AT HOME

KEEP YOUR DOGS AT HOME
HOT WEATHER REMINDER

Please remember to leave your dog at home during the hot summer weather. Animals are not able to sweat like humans do. Dogs cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paws. If they have only overheated air to breathe, animals can collapse, suffer brain damage and possibly die of heatstroke. Just a few minutes can be enough for an animal's body temperature to climb from normal to deadly levels that will damage the nervous and cardiovascular systems, often leaving the animal comatose, dehydrated and at risk of permanent impairment or death.

This is why we do what we do............

This is why we do what we do............

My Grade 1 students and I would like to thank all 3 of you once again for coming out to see us
at Kate S. Durdan school.
We loved seeing Angel and hearing her stories from Carole.
Dan was very thorough and inspiring too in helping us to understand why adopting
a shelter animal is so important and joyful.
Both of them made an excellent presentation about your facility.
It is my hope that many of the children went home to talk with their families about the
visit and will consider adopting from you in the future.

We also loved visiting your site and seeing our picture as we donated our cheque all together.
Every child wanted to be holding the cheque as we gave it over.

We then heard from a colleague that we were also on You Tube...we felt like movie stars as
we saw our picture and video on our smartboard.

Thanks again for the large impact you have made on our class.
We wish you and all the animals a happy, healthy and safe summer.

Penguin and Linda make a splash

Today, Penguin, a 6 year old Shepherd/Doberman mix, visited FJ Rutland's Daycamp today. The kids got to pet Penguin and ask questions of NFHS represenatives. Penguin was a real sweetheart allowing for the children to each get a chance to pet him. He loved the car ride to the school and was such a good boy in the classroom. He was incredibly patient and relaxed with a classroom of eager little faces looking at him. If you'd like to meet Penguin, please stop by and visit the NFHS today.

Marineland

Marineland
News Release Sept 10 2012

Agents from the Niagara Falls Humane Society attended Marineland today. This inspection was conducted in response to recent concerns raised over the health and welfare of land mammals at Marineland.
Following the Ontario Regulation 60/09 Standards of Care, agents inspected deer, elk, bear and buffalo and their habitats. NFHS Agents raised some questions about basic standards of care and requested further information and documentation which will be evaluated.

The current animal welfare legislation in the Province of Ontario in reference to animal care focuses on an owner or custodian’s obligation to maintain a minimum standard for animals within their care. Criminal law and the Provincial Offences Act do not address such issues as the ethics of animals in captivity or the use of animals for entertainment.

The investigation is ongoing.

"LIKE" Niagara's Humane Wildlife Removal so they can help the shelter
Do it by the end of May!

Kevin at Niagara's Humane Wildlife Removal has brought us a fundraiser that starts on April 1. All you have to do is look for Niagara's Humane Wildlife Removal" page on Facebook, and "like" it! If they get 1000 likes, Kevin will donate $1000 to the shelter!

He says,“We at Niagara's Humane Wildlife Removal are setting out to raise funds for the Niagara Falls Humane Society, which is a very important organization that is often overlooked when it comes to donations. I've been working with animals from a young age because my parents taught me to respect animals and how to deal with them, laying a foundation to what would lead to me provide the Niagara Region with humane wildlife removal . We go above and beyond to make sure we provide the most humane treatment of all animals that we deal with, just as the Niagara Falls Humane Society does. We are challenging the Niagara Region. If we get 1000 LIKES on our Facebook page during the month of April we will donate $1,000.00 to Niagara Falls Humane Society. Anyone that works with animals for a living or donates their time to help animals knows it's not a job it's a lifestyle.” So like us on Facebook-Niagara's Humane Wildlife Removal-and help the shelter animals.

The shelter needs your help, our supplies are running low. Jen Wanless, one of our vet techs, tells me, " Kitten season is here and we are in short supply of both canned and dry food for kittens. We are specifically looking for non coloured dry cat food-did you know that coloured food can cause upset tummies?"

Paper towels, laundry soap and bleach are also items we use every day since we are constantly cleaning.

Happy Ending For BenjieHappy Ending For BenjieHappy Ending For Benjie

Happy Ending For Benjie
Two weeks of searching is over.

It seemed like the kind of call we get every day. A concerned citizen calling to report a dog running at large.

But it was Benjie!!!

Thanks to kind and concerned Niagara resident Greg who did the right thing, and called us right away to report a dog with no human family in sight. He cared enough to stay close by, keeping the dog in sight, until our Agent, Bill Ashcroft, could get there. Benjie was happy to go with Bill.

You could almost hear the pup's sigh of relief when he got to the shelter. He seemed to know he was finally safe, and could relax. After two weeks of being scared and lonely, he was safe and fed and waiting for his family.

Benjie and his very happy humans are now on their way back home to Virginia.

We all love a happy ending. Have a wonderful life, Benjie.

BEAUTIFUL DONATION

This is Leah and she ROCKS for the animals! She came in today with a beautiful donation for the animals including well over $700! At a recent birthday she challenged her friends to make a donation instead of bringing her gifts, and they stepped up to the plate! Thank you for such a lovely selfless gift, Leah, you are amazing, and inspiring.
