AMAZING BIRTHDAY GIRL!
Thank you OliviaA big furry thank you to Olivia Cotte! Olivia just celebrated her ninth birthday and asked all her guests to bring gifts for the animals instead of birthday presents. Olivia says she loves animals, so she really wanted to do something to help them. Olivia hopes to inspire other children to do the same.
Olivia wanted me to tell you something that was 'really important', she wants to say "Thank you to all my friends for their support. They're great!" She told her parents that there was nothing she needed nor wanted and why should friends bring gifts to her party when she just wanted to have them there, this was "way more important".
Thank you, Olivia, you have an amazing heart!
PS, Happy birthday! |

Pet Visitation Program Launched at Niagara Falls Humane Society
A senior at Lundy Manor tells Program Coordinator Marilyn Mchaffie stories of her pets while Thor, the therapy dog, looks on.
The Niagara Falls Humane Society visited at Lundy Manor for the start of their Pet Encounter Therapy program on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. Many of the seniors told stories of the pets they had throughout their lives and the special place each pet still holds in their hearts. One lady spoke of visiting her grandparents in Newfoundland and how the Newfie dog would pick her up by her overalls and carry her home if she started to wander away.
On February 3 we visited the residents at Stamford Estates with Octavian, a cat adopted from the NFHS and Baby, a chihuahua belonging to a volunteer. It was wonderful to hear stories of animals loved by so many people. We are looking forward to going back for another visit soon.
Pet Encounter Therapy is important for many in residences for seniors and people with special needs. The Niagara Falls Humane Society is pleased to be involved with the community through the new visitation program. The Pet Encounter Therapy program currently is involved with seven homes in the city of Niagara Falls. For further information on this program please contact: volunteer@niagarafallshumanesociety.com |

Junior Fundraiser Ayden Garrett (right) donates to the Niagara Falls Humane Society!
Ayden Garrett's birthday wish was to help the animals at the Niagara Falls Humane Society. When Ayden celebrated her 10th birthday she asked for donations to help the animals instead of presents for herself. Her birthday wish came true as she collected $283.05 as well as blankets and toys to donate. When Ayden came in to give the Humane Society the donations she was presented with a certificate recognizing her as a Junior Fundraiser for the Niagara Falls Humane Society. We rely so much on donations from the public to provide for the animals in our care and are pleased that Ayden's love for animals will make a difference. |

Cats Enjoy Playing in Our New Cat Adoption Area
Come visit the cats in their comfy new roomWe have recently changed our one adoption room into a comfortable free range area for cats. The cats that are available for adoption in this room enjoy playing with many toys, lounging on the couch or cat tree, and climbing the many shelves set along the wall.
The room provides enrichment for the animals in a home like setting. People that are wishing to adopt a cat may observe them through the window and spend time with the cats to determine which animal would suit their lifestyle. The cats that have been in this room have adapted quickly enjoying the company of their friends in a relaxing atmosphere. |

Welcome to Canada, Eh!
It was an exciting journey for River, a black lab mixed breed dog on January 7th when he immigrated to Canada. He did not take the usual route as he crossed the lower Whirlpool bridge at a quick run. The Canadian Border Service Agency observed River crossing the bridge and notified the Niagara Falls Humane Society. Animal Control Officers tried on different occasions to persuade River to go for a ride in their warm truck but were unsuccessful. The SPCA in Niagara Falls, New York was contacted, however they did not have any reports of a dog matching River's description reported as missing. With the frigid temperatures there was much concern for his safety so humane traps were set and monitored. On January 9th reports of sightings of River were that he was limping which was due to an injury sustained while running at large. River was caught in a humane trap in the evening of January 13th and immediately rushed to the Niagara Veterinary Emergency Clinic where it was determined that his leg had been broken in 2 places. His leg was splinted and he received medication for his pain. On January 14th he was transported to the Upper Canada Animal Hospital for orthopedic surgery. River is now recovering well and is undergoing physiotherapy. He will require further follow up with the veterinarian and will be adopted once he has fully recovered. River is a very timid dog and is being socialized by the staff of the Humane Society. We are all pleased with River's progress and look forward to the day when he will play in his new home. The veterinary costs for River's care has exceeded $2100 and a fund has been set up to assist with these costs. If you wish to donate towards River's care please contact the Niagara Falls Humane Society. |

River
Now recuperating in a foster homeRiver is making great progress with his healing. His leg is getting stronger and his limp much less pronounced. River has now been moved to a foster home where he can continue to learn to trust people and other animals. River's foster mom reports that he is enjoying the company of his two new big brothers Baxter and Bentley (pictured) and is settling in nicely. He is gradually making himself at home and we are seeing progress in his ability to trust.
Keep checking back for progress report on River. We have great hopes for his rehabilitation.
Thank you to this experienced foster mom who is helping River. |

Important new website
OSPCA provides information about spay and neuter issuesDID YOU KNOW?
Pet overpopulation is at crisis levels in Ontario.
Each year, tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up on the streets, where they fall victim to neglect and abuse, or in shelters in search of new homes.
Spaying and neutering will reduce shelter intake and euthanasia.
Fixing your pet reduces health risks and improves behaviour in cats and dogs.
NEW EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED
This week the Ontario SPCA and its 50 plus SPCA and Humane Society Communities have launched a comprehensive provincial-wide educational campaign designed to encourage pet owners to spay or neuter their pet and help end pet overpopulation.
The marketing and communications plan includes the Society's signature ads in transit shelters, cinemas and malls across Ontario. The ads are also incorporated into a provincial library awareness campaign as a bookmark, and as an Internet advertising campaign. Other campaign elements include a new informative website (FixYourPet.ca) with fun features, including ringtones and downloadable wallpaper, plus electronic copies of print, radio and public service announcements featured in communities across the province. |

Thank you Alexa and Ashlyn!!
Caring girls make a differenceAlexa and Ashlyn Maude´s visit to the Niagara Falls Humane Society
When Alexa and Ashlyn Maude received an invitation to Olivia Cotte´s 8th birthday party they were very excited. They soon discovered that rather than a birthday present Olivia wanted her guests to bring a donation that could be delivered to the Niagara Falls Humane Society. This thrilled the girls and instantly they began to come up with a variety of ideas. Ashlyn decided to visit the Humane Society´s website in order to prepare a list of the items that were needed .
After a couple of days of preparing for the birthday party the girls were shown an article in Niagara This Week, which detailed the efforts of the Humane Society trying to get their new cat adoption centre started that would be operating out of Niagara Square. Having taken in a stray male cat “Cosmo” on Aug. 8/08 this idea hit very close to home in the girls hearts.
With the help of their mother, they were able to purchase large bags of cat litter, food, toys, treats and blankets toward their cause. Their nana donated a large dog crate and the owner of The Smiling Mom pitched in and donated a collection of unsold baby blankets for the crates.
On Friday Aug. 21st the girls packed up the items and made the much anticipated visit to the Humane Society. They were excited and thrilled make their donation that was welcomed with much appreciation.
Upon the visit they had the opportunity to play with some of the cats and kittens that welcomed them upon their entry, stealing their hearts and encouraging them to continue their donation efforts.

MANUCHE FINDS A HOME
wonderful news!September 10, 2009
Today one of the shelters long time residents, was finally adopted into a wonderful home. She was adopted because someone saw past what she was like in a cage and took the time to see what she was really like.
Everyone at the shelter is thrilled to announce that our 8 month resident Manuche has been adopted!
This just shows that you can't judge what any animal is like when they are in a cage. As part of Manuche's description we stated 'Manuche seems to be interpreted as moody by a lot of people because she growls a lot at other cats, but when she isn't cooped up in a cage surrounded by other cats that absolutely terrify her, she's so calm and sweet. Manuche is very loving with people, however she doesn't care much for other cats. She will be so happy to go to a home where all the affection and attention is on her. Manuche really needs a home where she can feel secure with her surroundings and receive lots of love, cuddles, and brushing so that she can truly be happy and not have to live in fear.' Manuche's new family already loves her and they have seen this wonderful side of our big beautiful lady.

Blessing Ceremony
Thanks to the public for coming out!Talk about going to the dogs.
This Sunday service had many of the trappings of a regular Sunday worship service.
Prayers, readings from Scripture and even some laying on of the hands.
The main difference: The service was held outdoors and the creatures God gave four legs far outnumbered those who were endowed with just two.
"This is such a feel-good event," said Cathy Fraser, the Niagara Falls Humane Society's manager of community relations. "It's a way of reaching out to the community."
About 40 people took part in the blessing of the animals service, which was led by Rev. John James, of St. Andrew's United, Rev. Kevin Block, of Christ Church Anglican and Kim Martignago, director of children and family ministries at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church.
The service, which is an annual event, is non-denominational and open to all pet owners and lovers.
Although people are allowed to bring other types of pets, the furry congregation is almost always canine.
Harvey and Debbie Dalton brought their dog Emo (which they named after a small, northern Ontario town they're fond of visiting) to the service for the first time.
"We always wanted to come down and show our support for the Humane Society," said Harvey, a longtime city worker.
Added Debbie: "I think it's a wonderful thing to have this kind of event.
"They (pets) are part of the family. Why shouldn't they be blessed, too?"
Rev. James said people can learn a lot of life lessons from their interaction with pets.
James said he often likes to take his own dog for a walk along the Bruce Trail.
When he encounters a hiker or jogger he'll yell ahead to let the person know that his dog is friendly. The responses he gets sometimes make him chuckle.
"Occassionally," said James, "I'll get some total stranger say, 'I wish all people were like that.'"

Don't Give Up Hope
Cat owner Amanda has been searching for her boy cat Tito since early April 2010, when he went missing from her home. On July 21st, Tito was brought to the shelter as a stray, but the staff recognized him from his missing cat picture. Amanda was called out to the shelter to confirm his identity, and sure enough, it was him. She had found her Tito! Amanda was speechless, she was so thrilled to see her boy. So here's a message to all who have lost a pet: never give up hope! Tito was strictly an indoor cat and he got out, but Amanda never gave up hope and he was finally returned to her. Congrats, Amanda! |

Many Wonderful Black Cats To Choose From
We currently have a huge amount of black cats available for adoption, including kittens. Sometimes these cats are harder to adopt out because of superstitions or the fact that their colour is so common in the gene pool. Often, people don't realize that the colour of a cat's fur is irrelevant to their breed or personality - it's only as important as a person's hair colour!
Check out our Adoptions section to see all of the lovely black kitties that are available right now.
You may find that the cat you've pictured in your head is very different from the one that suits you best! |
